    10. Contentual profile

      The complex challenges facing the global community demand knowledge and expertise transcending disciplinary boundaries. The Graduate Institute is one of the world’s oldest academic institutions devoted to the interdisciplinary study of international affairs. It houses departments of Anthropology/Sociology, Economics, History, Law, and Political Science specialised in international and development studies. The innovative MIA programme builds on these experiences and resources to uniquely equip its graduates with the analytical and professional skills needed to understand and tackle the major challenges confronting the international community.

      The MIA programme begins with a rigorous foundation in quantitative and qualitative methods and in the disciplines of the Institute. Interdisciplinary courses follow in three thematic tracks: Global and Regional Integration; Security and Peace-building; and Civil Society and Transnational Issues. All students undertake independent interdisciplinary research towards a dissertation. Applied Research Seminars expose them to stakeholders beyond academia and develop skills to design and execute research projects in partnership with them. Specialised, interactive, hands-on workshops help enhance professional skills, while internships for credit allow students to develop work skills and experience.

      Students of the Master in International Affairs (MIA) programme must choose one of the following three axes of specialization:

      • 1) Global and Regional Integration;
      • 2) Conflict and Peacebuilding;
      • 3) Civil Society and Transnational Issues.

      CIS offers around ten research and teaching assistant positions to each cohort of students admitted to MACIS. Based on a workload of around 10 hours per week, this generates an income of around CHF 1,000/month. This amount covers around 50 – 80% of total living expenses in Zurich. Such positions also offer a great opportunity to become involved in ongoing research projects undertaken by CIS professors. They are offered on a competitive basis upon admission.

      The Excellence Scholarship & Opportunity Programme at ETH Zurich awards merit-based scholarships to excellent students wishing to pursue a Master’s degree. For information on other sources of financial aid, please contact the ETH Zurich Scholarship Office. On average, one of the students admitted to MACIS succeeds in obtaining such a scholarship. Students may apply both for research and teaching assistant positions as well as the Excellence Scholarship simultaneously.

    10. Contentual profile

      The Master of Arts in Comparative and International Studies (MACIS) is a research-oriented graduate program in political science. It is offered by the Center for Comparative and International Studies (CIS), a joint institution of ETH Zurich and the University of Zurich. The MACIS programme aims at enabling students to conduct high quality research on a wide range of political phenomena, such as democracy, political violence, European integration, socio-economic development, and global environmental governance. To that end, students take a set of core seminars that deal with theories, methods, and their application to key areas of empirical research in comparative and international politics. Equipped with these skills, students can engage in their own research via participation in research seminars and involvement as research assistants in ongoing projects led by CIS professors. The basic structure and contents correspond to the educational components of a PhD program at one of the top universities in North America. It thus equips students with a very solid foundation for subsequent PhD research. Likewise, students pursuing non-academic careers can profit from MACIS due to its strong emphasis on analytical skills- tools which are easily transferable, and useful in the private sector, government, and/or international and non-governmental organisations.

Das breit angelegte Studium kombiniert die drei Disziplinen Rechts-, Wirtschafts- und Politikwissenschaften; der Unterricht findet in den beiden Sprachen Deutsch und Englisch statt. Mit der Erweiterung um zwei Disziplinen gegenüber der Herkunftsdisziplin aus dem BA der einzelnen Studierenden wird eine zusätzliche Qualifikation für Berufstätigkeiten erreicht, in welchen Erfahrung im interdisziplinären Denken gefragt oder von Vorteil ist. Das Alleinstellungsmerkmal des Studiengangs, der in dieser Form bisher nur an der Universität Basel angeboten wird, liegt in der Verschiebung vom reinen Ländervergleich hin zur Analyse gesellschaftlicher, politischer, rechtlicher und ökonomischer Beziehungsnetze innerhalb und ausserhalb Europas.

      Der integrierte Studiengang Kulturwissenschaften steht für ein neues, schweizweit bislang einzigartiges Modell. In stärkerem Masse als in den traditionellen Fachstudiengängen bietet er Studierenden die Möglichkeit, ihr Studium selbständig zu organisieren. Von den auf Masterebene beteiligten Fächern – Ethnologie, Judaistik, Geschichte, Philosophie, Politikwissenschaft, Religionswissenschaft, Soziologie und Wissenschaftsforschung – ist eines als Major zu wählen. Ausserhalb des Major belegen die Studierenden kein zweites Fach, sondern können aus dem gesamten Lehrangebot der Kultur- und Sozialwissenschaftlichen Fakultät nach eigenen Interessen Veranstaltungen auswählen, die die Studieninhalte des Majorfachs sinnvoll ergänzen und disziplinenübergreifend vertiefen. Der Studiengang ist den innovativen Forschungsansätzen innerhalb der einzelnen Fächer verpflichtet und bezieht sich inhaltlich auf folgende Themenbereiche:

      • Ethnologie,
      • Judaistik,
      • Geschichte,

    10. Contentual profile

      La maîtrise s'appuie sur les ressources de l'Institut d'études politiques et internationales (IEPI) et de ses différents groupes de recherche. L'IEPI constitue aujourd'hui, par le nombre de ses enseignants-chercheurs, l'un des plus importants centres de recherche et d'enseignement en science politique de Suisse. Il se caractérise par une large ouverture à l'interdisciplinarité autour de collaborations au sein de l'UNIL (sociologie, histoire, études genre, etc.), de même qu'avec d'autres institutions en Suisse (IDHEAP, UNIFR) ou à l'étranger.

      Le programme offre trois orientations spécifiques à choix couvrant les principales sous-disciplines de la science politique:

      • les politiques publiques,
      • les relations internationales,
      • la sociologie politique. Elles ont pour but de permettre à l'étudiant de définir son cursus en fonction de ses intérêts et ses objectifs professionnels.

      Le plan d'études de la Maîtrise universitaire en science politique est composé de trois volets:

      • a) Le tronc commun fait partie intégrante des trois orientations spécifiques. Il se compose d'enseignements de méthodes quantitatives et qualitatives, ainsi que d'enseignements permettant de développer une réflexion épistémologique sur sa propre discipline, et de disposer d'éléments de base de philosophie politique.
      • b) Les orientations spécifiques: L'étudiant choisit l'une des trois orientations qui représente la spécialisation principale de son cursus:
        • Action et mobilisations politiques;
        • Gouvernance et action publique;
        • Mondialisation: enjeux politiques, sociaux et environnementaux.

      Studienleistungen aus einem anerkannten Masterstudiums in einem dem PMP Master nahestehenden Fachgebiet können bis zu 30 ECTS angerechnet werden

    10. Contentual profile

      Die zunehmende Komplexität der Staatsaufgaben und ihrer Interventionsformen fordern ein neues Verständnis des öffentlichen Dienstes im Allgemeinen sowie die Modernisierung der öffentlichen Verwaltungen. Es werden Entscheidungsträger mit interdisziplinären Kenntnissen gebraucht, welche Führungsprobleme sowie wirtschaftliche, politische und rechtliche Probleme verstehen und lösen können. Da sich in der Schweiz drei Kulturen und Sprachen treffen, erweist sich ein multikultureller Führungsansatz im öffentlichen und halböffentlichen Sektor als notwendig. Um diesem Bedarf gerecht zu werden, bieten die Universitäten Bern, Lausanne, der italienischer Schweiz und das Hochschulinstitut für öffentliche Verwaltung gemeinsam den Master in Public Management und Politik an. Dieser Lehrgang beinhaltet eine interdisziplinäre Ausbildung, methodologische Instrumente, Fallbeispiele und Übungen aus dem öffentlichen Sektor sowie thematische Seminare, in denen die Studierenden ihre Fachkenntnisse mit der Realität der öffentlichen Verwaltung konfrontieren können. Dabei werden die verschiedenen Landeskulturen durch Professoren aus den drei Sprachregionen sowie durch das Angebot verschiedener Studienoptionen in diesen Regionen miteinander verbunden.

      Im Grundstudium während des ersten Jahres werden Module in den Fachgebieten öffentliches Recht, Politikwissenschaft, Volkswirtschaftslehre, Management der öffentlichen Verwaltung sowie interdisziplinäre Veranstaltungen und Forschungsmethodik absolviert (60 ECTS). Das Vertiefungsstudium im Folgejahr bietet die Gelegenheit, sich während eines Mobilitätssemesters in einem der Fachgebiete zu spezialisieren (mindestens 18 ECTS). Der Master PMP wird anhand einer Masterarbeit mit oder ohne Praktikum abgeschlossen.

      Die Interdisziplinarität macht den Studiengang attraktiv, verlangt aber auch eine hohe Leistungsbereitschaft der Studierenden.

    9. Formal particularities

      The modular Master study programme regularly starts in the autumn term at one of the three partner universities in Basel, Luzern and Zürich (by rotation). The university at which the introductory basic part takes place is considered as the main university for the respective academic year. Independent thereof, students are free to chose their home university, at which they ask for admission and matriculation. The university chosen by the student is consered as the home university. In the framework of the the master study program students participate in courses of all the partner univeristies and take advantage of the competences and research orientation of the three universities.

      It is possible to start the master study program in the spring term, too, but it is then strongly recommended to ask for a counselling interview with the coordinators of the study progam.

      Within the study program it is obligatory to participate in a so called master course and one more master course can be taken as part of the profile area. A master course is a joint compact seminar of the joint degree Master study program, the doctoral level and the fellow program of the ZRWP. It takes places in each spring term.

      If the university of Lucerne is chosen as home university: In the course of the master study program, all students have to gain 4 ECTS credits in social competence. These social credit points serve the aim of actively including students into the instituion of the university and should, inter alia, foster peer-to-peer-work. There are different possiblities to acquire social credit points; for example through tutorials, lecture groups, cooperation in the student organisation, or scientific task.

    10. Contentual profile

      The master study program anlaysis the intersections between religion, economics and politcs in a transdisciplinary way and seizes on pressing societal questions around religion on a local, an international and a global level. The students deepen their knowledge on the connections between religion, economics and politics from different, complementary scientific perspectives. Fundamental debates, theories, and methods from the fields of political science, economics and the study of religion ans well as from Christian theology are held, learned, and reflected critically. An inter- and transdisciplinary perspective is practiced during the course of the studies and within the Master thesis.

      In the first semester students should participate in an introductory module and in at least two of the three basic modules on religion, economics or politics. In this way, students acquire the disciplinary basics which did not form part of their former academic studies. The second and the third semester are dedicated to five areas of specialisation:

      1. Religion and Economics: individuals, markets, social orders (economics of religion)
      2. Religion and Politics: political system, political culture, civil society (political science)
      3. Religion and Public: media and representation, conflict and cohesion, education and passing on
      4. World society and globalisation
      5. Institutions, associations, religious communities In the third and fourth semester students write the interdisciplinary master thesis.

      Each university sets its own scientifc focal point within the frame of the activities of the ZRWP: Economics and religion is mostly represented by the university of Basel, politics and religion mostly by the university of Luzern, and public and religion mostly be the university of Zürich. The wide-ranging profiling area allows students to set their own indivudal priorities according to their interests in studies and research autonomously.

    11. Shares of study

      Share in political science

      6 - 120 ECTS

      Information

      Students who do not hold a BA in policial science have to complete the basic module 'politics', thus they have to complete at least 6 ECTS credits (amounting to 10 ECTS credits together with a seminar paper) in political science.

      Apart from this prerequisite, students are free to choose their focus themselves. It is thus formally also possible to complete this MA study programme with only 6 ECTS credits in political science. It has to be noted, however, that almost all courses forming part of the core modules also contain political science, often embedded within an interdisciplinary perspective. A certain basic competence in the area of political science is thus necessary for students of this master study programme.

      The master study program consists of the contentual modules world society and global governance. Within these modules, students can set their own specific priorities. Besides, the empirical module research-praxis-methods allows students to choose either a methodological and research orientation or an applied one.

      In the module world society the combination of the social scientific disciplines involved allows to understand the historical distinctiveness of today's world society. This distinctiveness shows, for example, in the development of global functional systems (such as politics, economy, science, religion, law), of networking across borders, transnational communication, and mobility. Not only the integrative tendences, but also the conflict lines of world society are investigated, as well as different forms of their social, political and legal treatment.

      The module wold politics focusses on the forms of crossborder juridification and their democratic legitimacy, as well as on questions of migration and citizenship. It sets an emphasis on the global (inter alia: UNO, WTO, IWF…) and regional (inter alia: EU, NAFTA, ASEAN…) structures of governing beyond the nation state, on the analysis of the state and non-state actors as well as on the contents of the resulting governance performance and output. This includes the legal aspects of increasing international institutionalisation.

      In the course of their studies, students learn to develop and treat their own research questions as well as to solve practical problems. Building on methodological foundations, the empirical moddule research-praxis-methodologyallows for further specialisation. Students can choose among courses on quantitative and qualitative social science methods, scientific workshops also involving 'practitioners' from relevent organisations, or an internship of (at least) eight weeks with a concurrent evaluation. Internships are possible within research projects (at the university of Lucerne or within other institutions), in associations and parties, in public (international) organsations, in the private economy or in non profit organisations (for example NGOs) on a regional, national, or internaional level. The internship and the respective evaluation offer a unique possibility to interlock studies and proffessional perspectives.
